New DAF fleet expansion for IAA

IAA, formerly SYNETIQ Auctions, has implemented a fleet of 21 new DAF XD and XB trucks to support growing volumes across the UK.

  • 21 new DAF XD and XB trucks support expanded operations
  • Move from 12- to 16-tonne operations addresses electric car weight challenges
  • Local DAF Dealer North West Trucks praised for strong partnership and service
  • "DAF continues to deliver on every front for our business," Mike Griffiths, Head of Transport for the UK

The fleet delivery includes DAF XB 16-tonners which signals a strategic shift from 12-tonne GVW to address the growing challenges of electric car recoveries.

12-tonnes to 16-tonnes GVW – a strategic move

The strategic transition from 12-tonne to 16-tonne GVW directly addresses the operational challenges for recovery operators with the increasing popularity of electric cars. As electric cars become more common in the vehicle parc, their significantly heavier batteries create new weight challenges for recovery operations, potentially compromising Service Level Agreement performance if not properly addressed.

The move to 16-tonne GVW provides the operational flexibility to optimise loads while maintaining the speed and efficiency. Traditional 12-tonne trucks, once adequate for collecting multiple ICE vehicles, now struggle with the weight penalties imposed by electric cars, creating potential operational delays.

Mike Griffiths, Head of Transport for the UK, describes the GVW increase as, “a direct response to the evolving demands of the marketplace. Electric cars are considerably heavier than their petrol or diesel equivalents, and that weight difference impacts everything from loading capacity to operational efficiency."

This strategic shift has been supported by the delivery of 21 new DAF XD 6x2 and XB 4x2 rigid models, supplied by DAF Dealer North West Trucks in Huyton. The new fleet includes 12 XD 410 rigid 26-tonners with DAF's 'FAR' 6x2 rear-lifting axle configuration and seven-car transporter bodies from our partners.

On the decision to continue the company's long-standing partnership with DAF, Griffith says, “DAF continues to deliver on every front for our business. Reliability and ongoing service are key, and our relationship with North West Trucks at dealer level is second to none. With 85 percent of our 100-strong fleet now DAF, we know we can rely on the product and the people behind it.”

Driver acceptance has been strong, particularly with the latest New Generation DAF models. “Feedback from drivers on the new XBs has been excellent,” adds Griffiths. “The safety features are a real highlight, and the vehicles are praised for their driveability and comfort.”

This driver satisfaction translates directly into operational efficiency, contributing to better performance and reduced driver turnover – both important additional factors in maintaining a high level of service.
