Lorry driver died from burns after gas cylinder fire

A lorry driver died from severe burns after a gas cylinder used for cooking set his cab on fire in Nottinghamshire, the fire service has said.

Darius Labunskas was rushed to hospital after suffering serious injuries in the fire at the aerodrome in Watnall Road, Hucknall, on 26 July 2025.

The 54-year-old was rushed to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham but died the following morning.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said an inquest on Monday concluded Labunskas died as a result of severe burns.

A fire investigation after the blaze found the fire originated from a 3kg LPG gas cylinder being used for cooking inside the enclosed lorry cab.

Following the hearing at Nottingham Coroner's Court, the fire service highlighted the dangers of using portable cooking devices in enclosed spaces.

Richard Leighton, head of community safety and engagement, said: "These devices should only be used in well-ventilated, appropriate outdoor areas.

"It is essential to check that equipment is in good condition before use, to never leave it unattended while operating, and to ensure it is cleaned and safely shut down afterwards."
