Bradford-based CT Glass has turned to Volvo Trucks for the first time, acquiring two FM 380 6x2 rear-steer rigid curtainsiders to support its busy operations.
Supplied by Jason Robinson, Area Sales Manager, Crossroads Truck and Bus, the new trucks will travel throughout the UK delivering glass partitions. The rigids replace models from a rival marque, with Volvo Trucks selected this time due to its brand reputation and customer service.
Paul Smithson, Transport Manager, CT Glass, says: “The decision to go with Volvo came down to the strength of the brand and the way we were looked after throughout the buying process. When we spoke with Jason, it was clear that we could rely on a consistent level of support from Crossroads. That kind of clarity is important when you are evaluating a new manufacturer for a fleet that must hit demanding schedules every single week.
“The FMs have come in and done exactly what we hoped for, delivering strong fuel economy, a comfortable cab and features the drivers really value. The first vehicle set a strong benchmark and the second has followed the same path, which gives us real confidence as we look toward future replacements.”
Increased manoeuvrability and driver comfort
The new rigids’ 380 hp powertrains are paired with Volvo’s 12-speed I-Shift automated gearbox technology, which evaluates information about weight, speed, torque demand and road grade to perform every single shift with precision. By constantly communicating with the engine, it adjusts the revs and brake effect for maximum performance.
Spacious Globetrotter cabs have each been fitted with several creature comforts, including leather upholstery, an electrically operated roof hatch with tinted glass, and microwave.
To boost manoeuvrability, CT Glass has opted to spec both Volvo FM rigids with hydraulically steered rear tag axles, ideally suited to the typical delivery locations the trucks will face.
“We’re regularly delivering into urban locations that are tricky to navigate,” adds Smithson. “The rear-steer setup makes a big difference for the work we do. Having that extra flexibility helps the drivers handle restricted spaces safely and with far less stress.”
Expected to remain in the fleet for at least five years, the trucks will predominantly operate Monday through Friday, each completing four to five deliveries per day while clocking up to 80,000 km annually.
The new additions are backed by a five-year Volvo Gold Contract, which includes preventive maintenance and repairs to guarantee CT Glass the most comprehensive and personal service, offering total peace of mind.
A leading independent glass manufacturer, CT Glass supplies a wide range of toughened and laminated glass, as well as heat-soaked and heat-strengthened glass products.
